The history of Jupiter can be traced back as early as the 1500s, starting with the Ancient Indians. Fast forward a few hundred years, 3 wars in quick succession were fought, and the Seminoles were forcibly relocated. Early settlers and homesteaders were drawn to Jupiter by the meeting of the Loxahatchee and Indian Rivers, which were abundant with seafood, and the fertile soil which was perfect for growing all kinds of citrus and pineapple, as well as plentiful hunting. In 1853 the Jupiter Lighthouse was constructed, marking the reef off the coast, making it an important navigational tool. The completion of the Florida East Coast Railway made Jupiter accessible to all and Jupiter became home to people from all walks of life, from wealthy winter residents, Florida “crackers,” and settlers seeking a new beginning.
