Located on Florida’s Treasure Coast, Stuart came about as the result of multiple Spanish galleon shipwrecks, thought to be the result of a major hurricane. The ships were carrying cargo of silver and gold. The town was originally called “Potsdam” after a local German immigrant, but was renamed Stuart after another local landowner bought up much of the land in 1895. The town was incorporated in 1914, and became the county seat in newly created Martin County. Stuart thrived with the completion of the Florida East Coast Railway, bringing with it a booming tourist industry, commercial fishing, boat yards, and an auto bridge over the St. Lucie River.
Stuart is chock full of outdoor as well as indoor activities. Well known as “The Sailfish Capital of the World”, besides excellent fishing, activities include beautiful beaches, Sailfish Waterpark, camping, windsurfing, snorkeling, boating, hiking, and many parks to explore. Golf, shopping, and picnicking are also available to fill your afternoons. In the evening you can enjoy a fabulous seafood dinner at many of the fine dining establishments, take in a show at the historic Lyric theater, stroll the Riverwalk boardwalk, or even catch an outdoor concert.
Real estate in Stuart is plentiful and diverse. From beautiful homes on the St. Lucie River or the Atlantic Ocean, to spacious new construction and cozy historic beauties, Stuart has something for everybody.
