The area that would become West Palm Beach was settled between 1870-1880.
Original settlers cultivated tropical fruits and vegetables for shipment north. The city itself was platted by Henry Flagler as a community to house the servants who worked in his two grand hotels on Palm Beach. The city was then incorporated in 1894. Originally tents and shanties, the new town council decreed that these be replaced with brick and stone buildings. The city grew rapidly in the 1920s but was devastated by a 1928 hurricane as well as the Great Depression. Growth began again with the onset of WWII and the construction of an Air Force base which bought an influx of service personnel and families. In the 1950s air conditioning was invented, which also helped West Palm Beach to grow with the advent of comfortable year round living.
